Update 27th June 2022
Two fish today one out of Sangsters at 7lbs and the other nice and fresh out of the Stream 8lbs on on a full floating line and a no 12 cascade. Water up an inch today with light rain and cloud. Rain forecast over the next 10 days so hopefully it gets into the ground and the river level rises and freshens everything up.

Farr Side Apr 2022
Dear All
I hope you are all are well and have managed to wet a line
with some success.
We are up and running at Bemersyde!!
Congratulations to Colin Chisholm with the 1stfish of the year out of the Boat Pool on Wednesday 20th April 12lbs.
Quickly followed by Tony Conroy on the 23rd April with a 8lb fish on a one-inch cascade tube.
It is dank and cold this Christmas Eve, but there have been some spellbinding evenings at Bemersyde recently. Ian filmed this short clip at dusk from Scott’s View on Bemersyde Hill earlier this week, the river in deep darkness, but flowing steadily all the while.
This year has been stopped and started by Covid restrictions and by some extraordinary weather conditions – the driest that ghillie, Ian Farr, has seen in 30 years – but there have been some magnificent moments too.
We were under Covid regulations when the season began in March but were able to catch one or two fish in April albeit with sea lice, before a seriously cold snap stopped the fish in their tracks.
It was a beautiful summer for many, but the serious lack of rain meant very low catches and in July none at all, which was extraordinary compared to the 30 caught in the same month last year. At least when the water is low you can still fish, whereas when it’s in flood..!
In August there were 8 salmon and a sea trout with the last syndicate fish caught on the 4th of September by Robin Valentine. Andy our second ghillie came on at that point and our patient rods had to wait until the 29th of September for four more fish and five on the 30th. Hats off to our resilient and optimistic syndicate whom we look forward to seeing next year.
We appreciate your support for Bemersyde, for the river and for Ian and Andy, and we know that even when there aren’t fish about just being on the beat with a rod in your hand is a great way to spend a day.
There have been some marvellous high points this year; for example Harriet Oldale - who is learning how to fish and had never caught a salmon before - caught one within about 10 casts and landed it on the far side of the Cromweil. Ian told her how lucky she was “beginner’s luck surely!” and 10 casts later she caught another one! (10 and eight pounds). Commiserations to our five other experienced roads that day who did not catch a single fish!
Keith Skeoch had a magnificent week with seven in one week. For the record, Red Francis and Gold Willie Gunn were probably the most popular flies.
When the fish were quiet - but also when they were there – nature kept up a terrific show with kingfishers, ospreys, otters and peregrine falcons all putting in an appearance. Ian maintains that the kingfisher is the best fisherman on the Tweed, albeit his life depends on it!
The hut has also been given a facelift and the loan extended, although we lost a bit of bank in the last big flood. The river is changing with the floods and there is more gravel moving around. We watch with interest to see how it will be next February.
Another huge highlight was the celebration and presentation of the Bemersyde and Malloch trophies in September. A great party was held with deckchairs on the lawn outside Bemersyde House and it was terrific to be able to gather everyone together to congratulate two years’ worth of winners and to celebrate two seasons.
To all of you who have fished here this year we hope that you had a great time. Ian and Andy are looking forward to the next season already. From everyone at Bemersyde, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
