Week beginning 13 November 2021
Monday 8th November. A nice dry mild start with the gauge showing 2’1” and clean, a fish was lost in the slap first thing but that was it for the day, rain this afternoon but no gauges showing a rise this evening. South wark had 3 today and Lower North Wark had one, Upper Floors getting 3 was the top performer further upstream.
Tuesday 9th November. A wet start to the day but it soon faired up and turned into a lovely day almost warm with some sunshine. A 5lb grilse was caught at the top of the temple which was the total catch for the day. Around 18 fish reported off the river today but it was rising further up so that might have affected some of the beats further upstream.
Wednesday 10th November. A lovely late autumn day with not a cloud in the sky no wind and mild, there were no fish either at the Lees at least. Lower north wark had one but in general the whole river was quiet, I should think the height for a lot of beats would have been spot on today; it was up 6” on yesterday but still clean.
Thursday 11th November. Another lovely start to the day with blue skies and no wind. Paul took Paul Beecher to Learmouth and they had the cleanest fish we’ve had since August a nice clean 7lber, in the temple this afternoon Lee and Peter had a 5lb hen on a Frodin style monkey. Upper Floors were top beat getting 4 for the day. Some showers coming in tomorrow some of which could be heavy. 2’0” on the gauge today and nice and clean.
Friday 12th November. A damp start with showers throughout the day, a fish was lost this afternoon in the ledges and a salmon Kelt landed this morning. 1’11” and nice and clean. Ian Farr text this afternoon to say the river was up 6 inch with him. Not much to write about as I’m not there at moment.
Saturday 13th November. Nice mild autumn day with no wind, river rising and was sitting at 2’11” on the Lees gauge at lunchtime.
That’s the season effectively over at the Lees for 2021, not a lot to reflect on, a lack of water and a lack of fish, the expectation that last year’s good run of late spring and summer fish didn’t continue but it might next year.
I’ll be back with my rambles next April as I’m off to warmer climes, so good luck to all you hardy souls next February and March.
