Week beginning 15 June 2015

Monday 15th June A better day for fishing weather wise as it was overcast and not as warm, we had 5/6 follows/bow waves in the Slap but no pulls, Terry then waddled into the Cauld boat and we gave it a bottle tube followed by a Sunray but never saw a fish. Richard Harrison of pea fame (no relation to flipper) lost a nice fish in Cornhill bend this afternoon which must have taken him round a rock as his leader snapped and came back all frayed. The lads are coming back tonight for a go at the Seatrout so we’ll see how they get on. 11” and 56 degs. Went back along this evening to fish for some of the fantastic Trout that have been rising but it was rather cool and there wasn’t a thing rising, team Harper arrived for a go at the Seatrout in the Cauld, well two of them did the other one supervised with a dram. I flicked a fly over the Slap and had a follow or a bow wave for the first few casts then nothing. Richard Harrison lost a nice Salmon in the tail of the Cauld and that was Monday.
Tuesday 16th June The usual follows in the Slap on the first few casts then quiet. Got Terry into the Cauld coat with a wee sink tip on and he promptly pulled the fly out of the salmons mouth that was obliging enough to bite it, we then stuck on a “skimmer” on a 13”0” rod and had a fish really attack it with a great splash, recast to same place and this time it was on and turned into a fresh 9lber, it’s just the best way to catch a salmon. Graham Whitty had a pull in the back of the wall whilst Richard who was fishing at West Learmouth never had a pull (that’s spinning for you). This afternoon there were a number of fish showing in Cornhill bend and Duddo but no pulls. About 11” on the gauge and 56 degs, bit of a wind getting up later this afternoon and rain on the forecast for tonight/tomorrow.
Wednesday 17th June A nice enough start to the day and we landed 3 fish between us which made it a better morning, Cauld 1@8lb, Learmouth 1@8lb and Temple 1@7lb that as far as the weather goes was as good as it got as the wind was with us by lunchtime. I went down to the bottom of the beat for a cast myself but the wind was blowing upstream and I just can’t be arsed with the wind. That’s one of the reasons I’d never go to Argentina to fish, it never stops blowing, even if it was a free holiday I wouldn’t go, not for the world record Seatrout, I’d rather cut my leg off with a rusty pen knife. There are fish showing round the beat, not loads but enough to keep you keen enough, 11” and 58 degs today still clean. The club lads had a couple of Seatrout last night from Cornhill bend and the Glide 4lb and 5lb. I hope it’s calm tomorrow.
Thursday 18th June Nope it’s windy again but that didn’t stop Graham Whitty getting a nice 10lb fish from the Slap on a well chewed Cascade, but and there’s always a but he blotted his copy book later on in the morning when he lost a big fish at the Iron gate when his fluorocarbon leader snapped. Now this happens a lot and it’s not light weight stuff he was using, it’s a well known brand sounds a bit like a well known race horse. No Seatrout or Salmon reported from the club lads last night but I see a couple of them are out tonight as I’ve just had a walk round the beat and the wind has dropped at last.
Friday 19th June Very quiet day with not much showing round the beat, cold with that bloody wind yet again and that’s enough of Friday.
Saturday 20th June The lads decided to pull stumps and head off, Graham went to Middle Pavilion Richard was at Learmouth and Terry headed back to Yorkshire. It was almost calm and a lot warmer so I stuck on a Skimmer and headed to Cornhill bend, a couple of casts and a big fat Trout was on the line a few casts later and a 7lb Salmon was on, great fun on a wee rod. The rest of today’s bag was a squirrel and a Carrion Crow. Photos this week are Graham’s fish from the Slap, the fat Brownie and the Salmon with a Skimmer in its mouth.
