Week beginning 17th September
Looking upstream from Cauld into Temple Saturday 22nd September
Aye life goes on, we find the Otter dead outside our hut on Friday morning (very sad) but this morning I’m no sooner into Cauld boat and a young Otter is swimming round the boat giving us a hard stare, also had a Gannet fishing the Temple which is the first time I’ve seen a Gannet on the Lees, It actually dived on a Salmon that the south Wark lads were playing in the Temple. It blew a gale all day again which made life hard and we managed 6 fish for the day best only 8lbs. Very heavy rain at 5.00pm and Ettrick rising at top end along with Tweed so a wee push of water will help freshen things up a bit. Tuesday – River up one inch and a very cold north west wind blowing down the top half of the beat and up the bottom half, very few fish seen this morning and what we did see was coloured but 4.00pm onwards a fair few fish started to show which delighted Patrick Despard who had only one pull all day then 4.30 two fish in as many casts. Wednesday was a steady day but not as many fresh fish about as I would expect to see, river dropping and clear 48 degs it fact it’s the lowest it’s been since mid May and speaking of Spring that must of been about the time when Edward c Bruce’s 22 lb fish came into the river brown as a carp with a Kype like a rugby boot. Rain all day Thursday and the gauges rising in the evening might lose a day but it will be worth it as it should tweak things up a bit and bring more fresh fish. Well there we are you have to be careful what you wish for 6’6” on Friday morning and broon so no fishing, got back on Saturday with a frosty morning ice on the car window first thing but flat clam and sunny for a change, but very few fish showing and the water a bit on the murky side, it cleared by mid afternoon and we managed to find 4 fish but would expect more as the Temple was a perfect height at 2’7” and 46 degs , still that’s fishing for you. Should be a much better height on Monday but the latest forecast is for more wind and heavy rain, the weatherman always seems to get it right when it’s a bad forecast. Just had a quick look at the catches for Saturday and they seem to reflect what we saw on Saturday at the Lees.
