Week beginning 18 July 2016
Monday 18th July.
A much warmer day in fact the warmest day this year by a distance but with the warmth came some really heavy downpours from lunchtime onwards by 6.00pm it was wall to wall sunshine so at least I’ll have some hot water tonight from my solar panels. Anyway the fishing, John Okell and Graham Nicol here for a couple of days and John was into a fish from the Slap in no time 6 or 7 casts was all it took, a nice fresh 10lb cock fish which took a #8 double cascady sort of thing fished on a full floater with a 5@ inter tip. John played it hard which is the thing to do in these warm water temps. Graham down at the Back of the wall wasted no time either getting a 10lber as well he followed that up with two grilse from Learmouth stream this afternoon, 4 for the day so far is a good score, I’ve suggested to the lads to get out there very early on tomorrow morning as the forecast is for 27 degs so by mid morning there’ll not be much going on. 1’1” and 60 degs with a summer tinge.
Tuesday 19th July.
A scorcher of a day the hottest day this year by a distance 28degs and humid. The weather more or less kicked the fishing up the arse today with no reports of fish from the rods although Graham reports seeing a good number in the Learmouth stream. I was labouring to Bruce today as he was repairing the Slap Croy, not a day when I’d choose to shovel 2 tons of concrete into a mixer but with thunder storms forecast and the chance of a flood a reality if it hits the catchment it had to be done today (see instagram for photo). So you be happy now terry Harper as you won’t fall off the end now. Picked the rasps in the garden tonight and now Sally is making a serious load of rasp jam to go with the blackcurrant jam already made.
Wednesday 20th July.
From the hottest day yesterday to one of the wildest days today with a big thunder and lightning storm going on along with torrential rain. John and Trish Burgon here for two days, the morning was a write off with the lighting all around and over us so John and Trish came back at 2.00pm when the storm had cleared and before any rise got down to us, Trish did the Slap first no surprise there then and followed that up with a run through the Cauld but no pulls. They are going to fish on until the rise gets down to us, looking at the gauges at 7.00pm there are two f them rising over two feet so fishing looks out for tomorrow as it’s going to be dirty, I suppose it needs a freshen up but 4 or 5 feet would of done a better job. Forecast is for a few showers tomorrow and maybe Friday and dry on Saturday which is good as I’m off to Kelso common riding.
Thursday 21st July.
Very mucky river today do no fishing. 2’10”
Friday 22nd July.
Still very beery but one fish caught in the Back of the wall
Saturday 23rd July.
