Week beginning 19 June 2023
Monday 19th June. A humid morning after last night’s rain, the gauge was reading 5 inch or so and a water temp of 62f but a very strong green colour to it. Three of the rods had decided not to bother due to the conditions and the fourth had vertigo and couldn’t walk, it turns out they weren’t missing much as the photos from upriver showed a river starting to colour up and a lot of weed was in the water column. The rain was welcome but it wasn’t enough to give the big flood we need, something like 4’0” would have been more like it.
Tuesday 20th June. Gauge reading 9 or 10 inch, 62f and very murky green with lots of green slimy weed coming down. Brian Cook turned up this morning and fished until lunch but neither he nor I saw a fish all morning. It did rain this morning but not enough to affect the river and in fact I’d think the irrigation pumps will soon have that sooked out. Hopefully the weed will have settled down by tomorrow along with the colour.
Wednesday 21st June. 6” on the gauge or thereabouts and 62f, cleaner today with much less slimy weed about. Brian did the slap and cauld but nothing was doing apart from a wee trout, Paul went off down to learmouth and had a 6lber which was a river fish, he also had another pull and a splash at a sunray. A few more fish on the websites tonight and through the grapevine I’ve heard of some fresh ones which is great news. There was a heavy shower at lunchtime very heavy in fact and more rain forecast for Friday so maybe just maybe we might get a decent lift yet.
Thursday 22nd June. A warm start to the day with blue skies and just a slight puff of a breeze, 5 inch on the gauge and 62 degrees with much less weed in the water. Team Brymer here for three days. Duncan fished the glide and iron gate this morning and we did see a few fish in the glide along with a big dog otter, the fish didn’t pull nor did the otter luckily, up top Rodger did the slap and cauld but only one fish was to be seen, by lunchtime the sun was puting down a fair bit of heat and fishing was all but hopeless in a flat calm and hot. The cheery weathergirl says rain and cloud for tomorrow so if she is correct we should have a better chance.
Friday 23rd June. An overcast sort of day but still warm, gauge reading 3 inch perhaps and 62 f. Ross was up top and covered the slap with a few beasties, the sunray managed to get a reaction but not a pull, in the cauldstream what’s left of it nothing happened, this was repeated down the beat minus the boil at the sunray. There were 7 or 8 fish reported caught below us with Tillmouth getting one and the rest down by Norham and below, David Foreman sent me a photo of a nice fresh grilse he caught on a riffle hitch at Dritness I think, which is so far down you can almost see the Farne islands. The rain didn’t show up and forecast tomorrow is hot and humid.
Saturday 24th June Another humid day and fairly hot, water temp 66f and 0” on the gauge thereabouts. Just Duncan having a go today as the rest have left and Duncan was just fishing until lunchtime, I’ve not heard any reports so presume nothing caught. We badly need that flood as I’m running out of things to write, it’ll be a gardening report soon. Four fish reported caught below us and nothing reported being caught above us. Got some little bits of strimming done but it’s too hot and I’m too long in the tooth to be doing much of that.
