Week beginning 1 April 2013
Monday1st A day off for the Ghillies which was lovely got lots done, although the garden is still way behind with this prolonged cold spell, and driving down to the fishing hut this afternoon I realise that the Snowdrops are still in full flower on the first of April and it’s not an April fool. A sign of spring yesterday though the Osprey was seen at Wark, that’s the first sighting this year. Tuesday 2nd what a difference a day makes, not a pull yesterday and five today and lost a couple, one from the Slap and four from the Cauld all liced just shows it’s easy when the fish are there. We were using intermediate lines and a 1.5 inch Monkey. Wednesday 3rd Another five today! What’s going on? Mind you no complaints from me. The Clydebank raiders continued to haul them out with James getting three today and losing another two to pip Murray Stewart who managed two yesterday along with Robert and John getting a nice 9lb from the Cauld, again all the fish were fresh/liced. A nice calm sunny start for a change but it wasn’t long before the east wind was with us again. 1’7” on our gauge and 39 degs, we had the first hatch of olives today just a wee one but the gulls went mad and at least there will be something for the Sandmartins to eat when they get here. The lads reported seeing a good few fish at the bottom of the beat this afternoon so hopefully they will hang about here( sorry if you are fishing above us. ) I’m just so pleased to see the back of March it was a horrible month. Thursday 4th A nice calm sunny start but by 10.00am that bloody east wind was back making fishing the bottom of the beat very unpleasant, but we have the Cauld and would be lost without it. Rodger Ford getting a nice 8lb fish in the morning on a wee monkey, in the afternoon we flogged it but not a touch till 4.00pm when a few fish started to show and we had two in quick succession on a flying “c” this time, all the fish were liced and as fat as butter, so 13 fish in three days not bad going for April. Friday 5th Another cold grey day but that didn’t matter as there were fish showing all over the place this morning, it was just great to see them, we finished the day with 6 the best being 15lbs from the Otter stones caught by Andy Britton who also had a 9lb fish and two kelts from the Temple. James England had 2 from Learmouth stream 14lbs and 12 lbs and Mark Bowie had 2 from the tail of the Cauld. There were a lot of fish in the area as Learmouth had 9 for the day and south Wark 8, that’s one of the best days I can think of in this area at this time of year. Ours were all on fly apart from 1 from the Temple which is a bit slow for the fly at this height. There were a few more olives coming down this afternoon and I saw one hungry Trout taking them, but it’s still so cold with that east wind blowing every day. Saturday 6th A lovely sunny frosty start to the day and even a wee touch of west in the wind, 1’9” and 39 degs nice and clean. There were still a few fish showing, not as many as yesterday but enough to keep us interested, 1 out of the Cauld in the morning another in the afternoon and 1 from Learmouth stream at 11lbs all liced and all on the fly, the fly of choice being a monkey again. So 22 for the week thats as good a spring week as I can remember and made up for all that pain in March. The fish seemed to have gone up a couple of miles to Wark as they had another great day for April, let’s hope they keep coming. Still no Sandmartins on the Lees yet, there was a wee hatch of Olives again today but it only lasted 10 minutes and there was very few of them. The Otters been about all week and the Kingfisher was looking his finest today with the sun really showing him up.
