Week beginning 1 June 2015
Monday 1st June It’s more like mid October than 1st June with very strong winds and showers even worse in the west I hear so I’ll have to check the gauges later on. 1’5” and 50 degs this morning slight tinge of colour, John Leighton and Neil Wilson here for a day and they were both lucky boys, John getting one from the Slap about 6lbs and Neil getting one from Learmouth about 8lbs. Both fish on floaters with fast sink tips #8 Ally Shrimp and a #8 sort of Posh Tosh thing. There were fish showing in the Bags, Cornhill Bend and Learmouth Stream but we only had the two pulls all day. Whilst it was dry I got on with strimming the Cauld bank and unfortunately strimmed a young Blackbird it was almost fully grown so you’d think it would have flown off, I always walk through the bits I’m going to strim first in case there’s any nests. Just checked gauges and Teviot and Ettrick rising so tomorrow?
Tuesday 2nd June Blowing a hoolie this morning, the rods were not turning up as the river was 4’0” and brown. I made it to the hut walking along the fields as I’d decided that would be the safer option rather than have a tree fall on top of me and also the fact that the car has failed its MOT and I’m waiting for it to be repaired. I mowed a bit of grass and finished off painting the inside of the hut and then walked home again as the wind is really getting to me now, I’ve had enough, I hate the wind with a passion!
Wednesday 3rd June A better day as there was much less wind but the colour of the water was nothing to be pleased with. Team Burgon were here today and decided not to fish this morning and come back after lunch to see if it had cleared a bit, you could see about 2’0” into the water so John waded the tail of the Cauld and Trish (Slap queen) would fish down the far side with the fly, the only action we had was a big boil at a sunray variant, we did see a number of Seatrout and going on Tillmouth’s catches today there are plenty about so good things could be on the cards later in the week as the water clears more and settles a bit. The Osprey was with us this afternoon and the wee Cygnet is still with his “adopted” parents, there are also more ducklings about but no big clutches.
Thursday 4th June 1’6” and 54 degs still a bit beery but certainly fishable, Dave Charlton got a nice 7lber out of the Cauld plus another pull and there were some nice Seatrout showing, The Local club rod had a Seatrout last night and they had one tonight also. I’m off to Hawick for the common riding.
Friday 5th June It blew a gale this evening Gazebos all over the place it even blew the provosts marquee away. At least there was no wind inside the “Hut”
Saturday 6th June Still windy, no reports of any fish caught at the Lees, I’m still at Hawick.
Sunday 7th June Get back home to find plant pots all over the place and the garden fence broken, no wonder I hate the wind.
