Week beginning 1st October

3’6” on the gauge fair bit of colour 3 landed and a couple of other pulls, should be a lot better tomorrow with the river dropping and clearing. Tuesday was a much better prospect with the river clearing and steady more fish showing 2’8” and 48 degs all the rods had fish and we ended the day with 18 mostly fresh/clean all on wet 2 or wet 4 type lines. A great statement on the day was made by Neil Andrews (above) “I haven’t lost a fish today” he went on to lose 5 in 5 casts in the afternoon! There were heavy showers all morning and a very heavy prolonged shower in the evening and unfortunately the gauges were on the way up again in the evening so brown tomorrow. Wednesday we were back up to 4’00” and very dirty so no fishing to be had only high light of the day was a Buzzard hunting like a Kestrel and taking a big rat off the path where I’d just cut the grass. Thursday a nice sunny day with little wind and only one big shower over lunchtime, water like dark tea not many fish showing in the morning but more action in the afternoon when we landed 9 out of the 11 for the day, still on wet2 and 4 lines biggish bright flies best fish was 18lb liced hen from the tail of the Cauld by Francis Sidoli. Friday was the sort of morning that you love in Autumn on Tweed touch of ice on the car window but bright sunny light south west wind and clean water, well a wee tinge of colour just enough to hide the bad cast, 2’7” on the Lees gauge which is spot on for the Temple. We managed 21 by lunchtime with 10 of them going to Ian Merrell who was smiling like he’d discovered the secret of keeping waders fresh and all on a fly he tied himself. The fish went off in the afternoon when a wee rise of only an inch reached us, just shows how sensitive they are, bit like us Ghillies really. It’s a great leveller fishing, Francis Sidoli who normally bags up at every chance struggled to get two all day but persevered and after a cup of tea and a biscuit added three more giving us 29 for the day, mind this is the team that had 61 in a day two years ago and 41 last year in a day. Saturday started the same as Friday a lovely Autumn morning calm sunny, the top end of the beat was quiet and the Cauldstream let us down with only two fish out of it all day and they came wading the tail five out of the Temple then the fish seemed to go off with not a pull all afternoon. The middle stretch came good though with Ian Merrell getting 11 for the day which helped to get us to a great score of thirty one for the day, all our rods had fish a mix of new and not so new all on wet 2 and wet 4 type lines with a black and yellow conehead being the killer fly, looking at the river today(Sunday) it is 2’ 2” 46 degs and clean the forecast is good for the first half of the week so as long as the fish are in the mood another good score is on the cards.
