Week beginning 22 June 2015
Monday 22nd June Well the nights are fair drawing in now, actually the nights are fine it’s the weather, it’s cold dull and been raining half of the day but not enough rain to help the river heights. There were a few fish showing in the Slap first thing but no reports from Paul so I assume they didn’t score today. 11” and 54 degs. It’s always the same get a paint brush out and the rain starts, I got one boat done and down it came so it was a case of rain stops play today, score for the day so far is one mole. In fact it’s been so dull and cloudy today that my solar panels are not working so the fire is on tonight to give me some hot water and it’s late June!
Tuesday 23rd June The club lads had 3 Seatrout last night from the Glide and the Duddo so well done them, I’m told the rods lost two fish yesterday but nothing landed. Harry Stollard made up for it today though getting a 7lb fish from the Slap this morning. 10” on the gauge and 56 degs clean. An overcast start turning into a lovely warm afternoon so I got the other boat painted, some grass cut, some weed round the landing areas cut and repaired the fence and I might even have a cast for Seatrout tonight if it stays warm.
Wednesday 24th June Latest news for Wednesday is two Salmon, 1 from Duddo and 1 from Babyhouse along with a 8lb Seatrout from Duddo so well done the two club lads, they were all caught on a wee tube about ½ inch long and blue/silver. There were very few trout rising last night and it was the sort of night you’d expect them. Today as far as I know nothing caught although I did see a couple splashing in the Slap, I got some steps repaired at the Ledges and hunted down a Hogweed plant that a member of the public had reported, after lunch the rain was with us so it curtailed grass cutting that and the strimmer is getting serviced. There seems to be a good number of Seatrout downstream of us so a little lift of water would really help. Latest. I fished the tail of the Cauld tonight for Seatrout and while there were plenty there they were older fish that were showing and were super spooky. I went down first with a gold stoat #10 and second time down a Sunray not a pull was had, every time the line went over them they shot off so along with my leaky waders I headed home.
Thursday 25th June An overcast day with the odd shower 10” and 58 degs. Dan Curtis and Neil here today. Neil was first to dip a fly in the Slap and we had a big follow first cast then another fish had a couple of boils at the fly then all quiet. I took Neil into the Cauld while Dan went down to Learmouth, we never saw a thing in the Cauld but Dan was the lucky boy getting a lovely liced 10lb fish from the stream just opposite the bench on a #10 posh tosh. The rain that’s about is good for the plants and the garden but it’s not enough to put anything into the river. Later on that night I took myself off for a wander round the beat and to see what the club lads were up to, they’d had a couple of Seatrout from Duddo and the Babyhouse and there were plenty showing, they were catching them on Yellow Sally’s, dry flies about #12-#14. Score for the day was 1 salmon 2 Seatrout and 2 Moles.
Friday 26th June Overcast and light rain but humid along with it. 10” and 60 Degs. Neil and John here today, Neil up on the Slap croy first and had a couple of big bow waves but no action. John fished round the beat saw a couple of fish but no pulls either. I have decided tonight to try a different approach with the Seatrout in the Tail of the Cauld and pop some nymphs over them and see if they like the more natural approach, also scaled down from 13”0” to 11’0” and a #8 line, there is a light wind blowing but it should drop by the time I get on to the water, if that fails it’s a large dram when I get home and see if Sally wants to discuss any possible benefits of using a multi tip line!
Saturday 27th June Well the light approach didn’t work either I only saw one fish in the tail of the Cauld and it wasn’t interested, also I couldn’t be arsed to stay out till 11.30pm, thats the trouble with this time of year it never gets dark. So today, it was 9” on the gauge and 60 degs nice sunny morning with a bit of a west wind, there were a couple of fish showing in the Slap but this was the first time this week we didn’t even get a follow or a bow wave. The hens are laying fine and the onions are coming along slowly, very slowly in fact it’s just been such a cold spring/early summer. The local vet was here today flying his Lanner Falcon with a guy taking photos it was like raptor porn, he lost the falcon a few weeks ago and it turned up in Holy Island which is a fair distance even for a falcon. Plenty Seatrout down in the Tillmouth area it appears from the catches so I’m hoping this rain tonight tomorrow puts the levels up, even 6” would bring them forward, we really need a bit of cool water as this heatwave thats coming next week will kill the fishing stone dead without it.
Sunday 28th June Well there wasn’t that much rain last night(it was raining at 4.30am when my son arrived home from Galashiels Braw lads festival!!) and the river levels have not changed , on the bright side though the heatwave that was/is coming is not looking that hot up here, 22 degs at most on Tuesday
