Week beginning 22nd October
Monday- very foggy start, could hardly see other bank, plenty fish showing and a nice clean river 2’10” which is a tad on the big side but should of produced more fish, 11 for the day was good, but the Temple which is our high water pool didn’t produce the goods we also had three at 2lb which are a bit overwhelmed on a 15’ rod. If the Temple does come on we will have some great sport. Looked at this week last year and it shows not a thing from the Temple and the slow deep pools not working, but last year the fish were early and there were loads of old ones in the “Dubs” this year plenty fresh ones still about, watch this space. Well just shows you what I know all our fish b off overnight and are now living in the South Wark area who had a great day with 23, we struggled to 7. It was a real dreich day and very few fish showing after we had been through the Cauld for an hour or so I realised that it wasn’t to be, and I was really looking forward to getting amongst them as well. Wednesday, things were no easier plenty fish in Temple and Cauld but mostly old and only one from Temple this morning, but on the bright side our two young Otter’s seem to be thriving and were with us again this morning. Paul Robinson had a cracking 13lb fish from the Glide (see photos) which put up a scrap making us think it was a much larger fish.
A nice fresh hen being returned.
Fishing the Temple in the afternoon with fish jumping all around I was getting bored so I dug out a large orange Francis and we had a fish in a few casts and lost another, a coincidence I should think but it pays to ring the changes. Thursday started fine with a wee bit of sun for a change there were some silver fish showing today but we could only manage four and a few other pulls, the north wind picked up in the afternoon with a shower of rain which is a taste of what’s to come, the leaves were soon falling into the water and fishing the Cauld almost imposable with a leaf every cast. The fish that seem to want to pull the fly seem to be going straight past us to Wark for no reason as it’s a good height for the Lees. Friday a big drop in temperature for both the air and the water which was down to 42 degs, we had 11 fish today on a mix of intermediate and wet 2 type lines, but it seemed like less as we had to work for them. Fish of the day was a 19lb cock hooked in the Glide and eventually landed in Duddo Stream by Mike Nield, quiet a battle getting through Cornhill Bend. Saturday started bit dull but sun soon came out and brightened things up. The top end of the beat was hard work with the fish not keen to take in the Temple and the Cauld seemed to be devoid of fish but the middle pools were saving the day, we ended up with 12 for the day which is a respectable score the best being a 17lb cock from the Slap. Our two young Otters were with us again for most of the morning and a big flock of Golden Plover were giving a great ariel display we also had a Great Crested Grebe in Learmouth stream.
