Week beginning 23 June 2014

Monday 23rd June Well the nights are fair drawing in! Monday morning a new team on and a fish from the Slap first thing for Phil on a wee sinktip and a #10 treble, it was a lovely fresh 5lb Grilse I suppose, bit early maybe but Id call it a Grilse. We saw a few other fish there but had no other interest. 10 and 62 degs this morning and at last that colour has finally dropped out. I might take the rod for a walk this evening and see if I can tempt a Seatrout, then again I might not. Tuesday 24th June I did go for a cast last night but nothing doing bar getting wet as it rained, the lads on the other hand both hooked two Seatrout and lost them both which was a tad careless. 10 and 62 degs clean and raining, Harry Stolard had a couple of the usual follows in the Slap but no pulls, we then had a wee paddle round the Cauld but blanked there as well. Off to Kelso for some supplies this afternoon, a new lifejacket to stop you lot drowning and other supplies for the hut. The sun came out later this afternoon so popped back along and cut the paths round the beat and noticed more hogweed thats popped its head up over the undergrowth so more jungle warfare tomorrow. The river is getting very low now and could do with a flood to freshen it up and maybe bring something in, if theres anything to come in. Wednesday 25th June Another nice day but today we had a fish which made it all the better. It was Phils turn in the Slap and Cauld but he let Harry in instead, and much to Harrys delight he had a fresh 10lber on a #8 Silver Stoat along with another pull in the middle of the Cauld. Every day we get a follow or two in the Slap but rarely a pull but at least its a bit of interest. I took a wander down the beat tonight to check up on the club rods and everything was in order, very few trout rising and nothing bigger showing. I was going to fish the Bags for trout but there was a club rod in it Salmon fishing and the reeds are so high that I didnt bother, thats tomorrows job, cut the Bags. Thursday 26th June Another lovely day, the rods had decided not to bother coming today and I cant blame them really, so it was off to the Bags and strim all morning until my fingers were tingling which tells me its time to stop, anyway the Bags now looks very nice with its new haircut and in fact looks very fishy, just no fish in it. Friday 27th June Much cooler day and a bit overcast George Duncan and Brian down from Aberdeen to catch a Tweed Salmon but Ill keep it short They failed! So that was Friday, I cut the middle stream area which was taller than me but it looks a lot better now. Saturday 28th June Tony Brignall due to fish today but has had to call off due to hospital visit mind you hes not missing much, he was sending two friend to fish. I havent heard from Paul which means they also failed. It was Galashiels Braw lads festival today so it was up at 5.00am and off up the road, 341 horses out today and no one fell in the river at the crossing thats the only reason people go to watch the crossing. On the Seatrout front even the club rods are failing to catch any and they are fishing the bottom of the beat every night, so its back to the old story, lets have a flood to see if anything comes in.
Photos are Phil Cunningham ( I think thats your surname ) playing a fish off the Slap Croy, a nicely strimmed bags and some horses at Gala.
