Week beginning 23 May 2022
Monday 23rd May. Team Germany are here and things took a turn for the better. 11” on the gauge and 56 degrees with a North West wind. Draw done and Martin Tewes was on Learmouth stream and he put his position to good use getting a hold of four fish but only managing to land 2 of them, all on a Posh Tosh fly fished on a 5’0” fast sinktip, he made up for losing two by landing another down in Duddo this afternoon. Stefan Pauli had a hold of a fish in the Iron Gate but sadly it didn’t want to be landed and was soon off. Mark and Peter failed to get a pull but I’m sure they will catch up as the week goes on. Reports tonight of fresh fish downstream which is encouraging, Tillmouth had four, Cornhill two that I know of this morning. That is a good start to the week as last week things were not looking so good with only three for the whole week.
Tuesday 24th May. The fresh fish that were around yesterday seem to have buggered off upstream a wee bit as The two Wark beats Lower North and South had five fish between them, we had a fish on in the Slap but as it ran down into the Cauld it got the line under a sunken limb and the inevitable happened leaving Stefan fishless. Heavy showers this afternoon with thunder and lightning kept us off the water for a while this afternoon. The lads are having a go later on so we might end up with something on the scoreboard. We got an old anchor under the limb but we can’t move it, it must be jammed under a rock or two, it will have to go or Stefan’s fish will not be the last we lose on it. Forecast very windy for tomorrow so that will not help things.
Wednesday 25th May. My old nemesis the wind arrived, we have a low pressure to the north of us and a high to the south, we are in the middle so getting all the wind, it ruined the day, not completely as Martin caught a 11lb river fish in Learmouth stream but some parts of the beat were almost unfishable, Duddo had a two foot wave going upstream. Fresh fish being caught above us again today is starting to grate on me, good luck to the lads upstream but the fish should be staying with us at this level and temp. 10” and 56 degrees. Maybe tomorrow.
Thursday 26th May. It would have been a lovely day but that bloody wind was here again, waves going up the Bags and Duddo and down the Temple and Cauld the only nice calmish bit to fish was the Glide, it was sunny and without the wind it would have been warmish I suppose. 10” and 56 degrees on the Lees gauge. Four of five fish were seen in the Slap and the Glide but apart from that it was all very quiet. Carham and Birgham Dub had fish 6 between them; Sprouston had a fish as did Milne Graden the rest of the river very quiet. It is to be much the same tomorrow then calming down on Saturday but the wind goes into the North, awful weather for the end of May.
Friday 27th May. That effing wind was still blowing again today, it ruins the day. That said Martin had a hold of a fish in the Slap first thing this morning but that was all the action for the day unless they get something tonight. I have to say the salmon are a bit scarce at the moment, we see the odd one during the day but fresh fish are being caught upstream so there are some going through even at summer level. Maybe tomorrow.
Saturday 28th May. At last the wind died down and changed to the North rather than the North West, it made all the difference as we had three fresh salmon, maybe they were there anyway but with the wind we couldn’t really get at them. Martin had one from Cornhill bend and one from the Duddo stream, Peter had a fresh 6lber from the Slap. We did see a few fresh fish moving as well as some Seatrout, Mark Schaeffer had two cracking Seatrout of 4lbs and 5lbs on a yellow may dun last night from the Glide both were fresh.
