Week beginning 25 July 2022
Monday 25th July. The river was up 11” and full of weed right through the water column which resulted in weed on the fly from the first cast to the last, the lads struggled on through the day but really they were beat before they started. Hopefully tomorrow as the river settles again the weed will settle and we will get some fishing in.
Tuesday 26th July. Well the river didn’t settle in and if fact went up another inch, this brought even more weed into play and we didn’t even try today.
Wednesday 27th July. Team Godden here for 4 days and with the wee lift of water and the weed much less this morning I hoped we were in with a chance. Gene was up top and the Cauldstream failed to deliver again, it is just no use in low water and it always used to be a banker. In the slap he had a boil first and second cast to a #10 willie gunn on a short sinktip but no pull, we later tried a sunray where we had 3 separate fish chasing it but just not keen enough to grab it. Nigel down on Learmouth had a wee pull but it didn’t stick. Toby was the seatrout man this morning getting 2 from the Duddo both around the 5lb mark. Gene having done the cauld and Slap was twiddling his thumbs so we had a float up the Temple, just around the Temple itself a big bow wave a boil and a fish was on, he wasn’t stripping the fly it was just the movement of the boat that was giving it life, a 9lb old cock fish was the result and it had the backing off the reel. That was all the action for the day, I’d hoped for more but I’ll take that.
Thursday 28th July. The water is dropping away again, 5” on the Lees gauge this morning and 60 degrees with some weed lifting again. Down on the Glide right in the tail there are a good few seatrout, more than likely the same ones that have been there for a few weeks, at least 6 of them chased Genes wee sunray but none would grab it, the same happened to Toby this afternoon. Nigel had a wee pull in Learmouth and this afternoon Emma Toby’s better half lost a fish in the Duddo, that was all the action today. The catches on the websites are showing that from Milen Graden down there are a few fish but they are not keen to come forward.
Friday 29th July. A rather humid day with the Lees gauge reading around 5 inch and a water temp of 62 degrees. Nigel Crosskel was the rod on form or maybe just lucky as he got a fresh grilse out of Cornhill bend, it was only 2lb but very welcome as fresh fish are like hens teeth at the moment round here, plenty fish being caught below us, well below us I have to say, sort of lower Tillmouth and down, we await a flood.
Saturday 30th July. Toby gave it an hour this morning then joined the others in heading for home as it’s a long drive to deepest Norfolk. The Team is back in September so there’s bound to be some water by then. Not exactly a record July with only 4 landed but we can put it all down to conditions.
I’m on holiday next week so no report next week.
