Week beginning 26 May 2014
Monday 26th May 2’2” 55 degs and very brown water so I didn’t hold out much hope in fact I wouldn’t of fished but the lads have nothing else to do so they gave it a bit of a go just to fill in time really. Anyway we weren’t surprised by a fish tugging on the line so I got all the paths round the beat cut and a bit of lawnmower outside the hut, cleaned the windows so the lads can see all the fish jumping during lunch. Showers forecast off and on most of the week and looks like more substantial rain on Wednesday but that could all change.
Tuesday 27th May A nice enough day, bit overcast some sunny spells, water still a bit on the dark side and par for the course no fish! We did see one in the Slap and as usual the Cauld was devoid of Salmon, looking on the bright side of things though my spring cauliflower is ready and I had some for tea tonight and it was lovely. Onions are looking fine Clancy as is the rest of the garden so the pumpkin will be into the ground soon.
Wednesday 28th A miserable day with a east wind blowing and heavy showers, the water is still on the dark side but I was expecting a pull off a Seatrout but didn’t get one. We did see a fish in the Slap and big surprise we saw a fish in the Cauld but couldn’t interest either of them. I’m off to Dundee tomorrow to pick up son as he’s now finished university and hopefully will now make his own way in life, well after this common riding season. So from tomorrow the fishing reports will only be detailed when I’m there or as good as the info that I get. I’m just hoping that a run of good Seatrout comes in as there are very few Salmon about and nothing being caught below us. From Monday we go down to two rods per day until August, two rods are plenty during the summer especially if it’s a summer like last year.
Saturday 31st May. Nowt happened on Thurs/Friday so no mention. Anyway a fish from the Cauld! It’s been weeks since we’ve had one from the Cauld, it was an 8lb old fish but a fish all the same which puts us on 20 for the spring season, now to be known as “That spring” or even better never mentioned again. 1’5” and 52 degs with the river much darker than I’d like. Son is now home after mucking out his flat of 3 years of rubbish such as road cones and road traffic signs, it must be a student thing. Some correspondence arrived at the Lees today from The Fish Tweed enjoyment organisation (nothing to do with fishtweed) who seems to be struggling with the fact that his wife is a better caster/looker and all round better fisher than he is, the Slap has now been reserved for you Trish both morning and afternoon whilst John will be walking down on a daily basis to fish his favourite pool “The Annay” wading of course! The letter will be put up in the hut as a warning to all others with similar thoughts! No photos this week as I didn’t take any.
On Summer lets now so only two rods a day, but grass to cut, boats to paint/repair, hogweed to spray and common ridings and garden to sort out.
