Week beginning 29 January 2018
Thursday 1st February. Well here we go again, what will this spring bring? Today it brought us 3’0” on the Lees gauge with a touch of colour to the water from yesterday’s rise. It wasn’t very warm either in the North West wind especially since I’m just back from warmer climes. The only contact today was a wee salmon Kelt from the Cauldstream. Upper Floors had the first of the season followed by the Junction and Lower Floors.
Friday 2nd February. A much nicer day with no wind and a bit of sun that was doing its best to warm things up. 2’8” and 36 degrees and clean. John Macphail and father Stuart were with us today and John had a well mended kelt from the ledges, that was all the action for the day. There was one springer from the Junction but that was the only fish across the websites, it’s still very early days. The Kingfisher made his first appearance of the season along with the Oystercatcher but I’ve yet to see the Otter. I’m off to plant my Kelsae onions in the propagator, they should have been sown on boxing day I’m told but I was away too long to look after them, I’m sure they’ll catch up.
Saturday 3rd February. A totally different day today with steady light rain for most of the day. 2’7” and 37 degrees but nice and clean. We fished the top end all day but not so much as a touch was had. The four fish that were caught were from the Kelso area again which is the norm at this time of year, as the levels continue to drop we’ll hopefully get some action down here. I won’t mention the rugby.
