Week beginning 29 May 2023
Monday 29th May. A lovely warm sunny day but just a bit of an east wind yet again. Rodger Wadsworth here with son Tom along with Paul Copson and Brian Orme. Draw done and the lads set off to their respective beats, Tom was down at Learmouth and didn’t waste his chances getting a fresh 10lber from the stream. Up on the slap dad Rodger had a couple of follows at the sunray but they were just not keen enough. Paul and Brian fishing the glide downstream didn’t have any action either but I did here that Cornhill had a fish out of the bags early on, one of the learmouth rods also had a fish out of the glide but not a fresh one Dean text to say. It will be around 6 inch on the gauge as the far side of the cauld is also dry now; the water temp this morning was 56f in old money. Six fish reported on the websites and I’ve heard of 2 more so a lot better than Friday and Saturday past. Rodger and Tom are going out tonight so scores might change.
Tuesday 30th May. Another warm hot even day, just that bit of an east wind to cool things if you were in the shade. 6 inch on the gauge and 57f. Rodger and Tom decided on an early start down the bottom but it wasn’t as early as Cornhill who’d been through the pools already, early bird gets the worm and all that. The usual suspects were splashing about in the slap but none were having a look at any flies, it was the same story round the beat as the day hot hotter. Paul and Brian decided on a round of golf this afternoon whilst Rodger and Tom were keeping their powder dry and having a go this evening fishing a bit later tonight as they packed in just when they should have been starting last night. I got the weed cut round the slap croy, we don’t want to be losing a fish just before the net in weed and cleaned the windows of the hut so you can see all the salmon jumping when you are having lunch. Only two fish on the website both from Tillmouth.
Wednesday 31st May. Much more cloud today and an east wind yet again. 5” on the gauge and 57 degrees. Rodger Wadsworth had a brief hold of a fish in the slap on a full floater and a #10 Gledswood shrimp; he also had a follow to a sunray also in the slap but no contact as is often the way. Down at the bags Brian Orme had an unplanned swim as he tried to navigate his way through the foamy backwater, and that I’m afraid was all the action for the day unless Tom and Rodger fins something tonight, last night they said was very quiet and they had fished it until 11.00pm
Thursday 1st June. June already! We are sitting on 35 salmon for the season better than some and not much worse than the best this year. Team Burley here for three days and they were soon spread round the beat, the only action apart from Norman getting a wee troot in the bags was two follows bow waves in the slap to a sunray. There are a number of seatrout about but no action from them and a night time foray is not on the cards for me yet as it’s so bloody cold, grey skies all day with a north north east wind that was not pleasant today. 5” and 57f on the Lees gauge this morning.
Friday 2nd June. A overcast start but at last the sun burnt it back to the coast, this of course did nothing to improve the fishing but it was a nice day, an extra two inch on the gauge thanks to a freshet being released. Nothing caught again today and in fact only one fish on the websites. Got some hogweed sprayed and some willow suckers that are springing up all over.
Saturday 3rd June. Blue skies all over this morning, not a cloud to be seen and flat calm, the usual suspects were jumping in the slap and one silver seatrout showed itself but none would look at the fly, it was the same story round the beat. There is really not much to write about, summer level or below water temp 57f today and calm. The only drama today was a house across the road from me had a fire in the roof which caused much excitement with two fire brigades in attendance and the street taped off. No rain for the foreseeable future so fishing is going to be slow.
