Week beginning 2 July 2018
Monday 2nd July. A cloudy start and a good bit cooler, 6” on the gauge at the Lees and still clean, we don’t seem to get the blanket weed problem now that we did a few years ago, due to the nitrate buffer zone I presume. Both sides of the cauld are dry now and there is a lot of gravel along the edges. Team Harper here for three days except Terry isn’t here as he been dragged away on a cruise, Graeme Whitty had the only bit of action when a fish came up to his skimmer in the slap but didn’t touch it. The forecast is for another two weeks of warm sunny weather so not much is going to change.
Tuesday 3rd July. Another scorcher today, down to 5” on the gauge and 65 degrees. The only action was a fish that chased Graeme’s sunray out of the slap and in fact overtook it and disappeared into the hole at the cobble point. Not much else to say apart from the gardens looking good.
Wednesday 4th July. American Independence Day so happy independence day to you. Not much has changed from yesterday, still hot and sunny and the river is getting lower by the day. Graeme Whitty had a boil at his fly in the Glide but that was all the fishy action today. New team on tomorrow if they turn up. Still no rain on any forecasts.
Thursday 5th July. A cloudy start with a wee breeze today and new rods on who were keen as mustard, they fished the Lees last year at the same time for the first time and caught fish and seatrout, sadly that wasn’t the case this morning. Three Rodgers and a Steve make up the team and they were going back tonight for an evening cast. Water temp was 67 degrees this morning and around 5” on the gauge with a summer tinge. Five fish reported off the river today four of them below us. Forecast for tomorrow is back to sunshine and heat.
Friday 6th July. Not much of a change from yesterday really, the river was up 2” due to the freshet and had more of a tinge to it. Youngish Rodger took himself off round the beat to see if he could find an interested fish but he failed, but that hasn’t diminished his enthusiasm. I got a new seat fitted to the Learmouth boat to keep you comfortable if we ever get any water to put the boat on. Changed the wheelbarrow wheel and got stuck into the Jackdaws that are pinching all my grain, same thing happened last year, it took about 4 goes at them before they got the message. I hear on the grapevine that there are a lot of fish off the Thurso waiting to get in so maybe in a few weeks Tweed will be the same, you have to be an optimist at this game. Off to a wedding tomorrow so Paul holding the fort.
Saturday 7th July. Another hot sunny day, no reports of any fish or action from Paul so presume nothing happened. Wedding was a nice affair albeit a bit sweaty. Forecast is for more warm/hot sunny weather with no sign of any rain. The long wait continues.
