Week beginning 2 June 2014

Monday 2nd June A new month and a fish in the book! 10lbs Cornhill bend liced, perfect! 1’3” and still a tad beery, Neil Wilson and John Leatham on duty, a boil in the Slap and a couple more rises typical June stuff, but John was the lucky boy getting the fish from Cornhill bend. I’m heading out to see if I can get a Seatrout as there are a few below us and some big ones at that. Spent the day cutting grass, spraying weeds and painting the wooden boats. On the wildlife front the local vet told me he had seen a red footed falcon last week which is a rare visitor to our shores, it was at Cornhill bend area taking Dragon flies.
Tuesday 3rd June 1’3” and 55 degs still beery Tosh and Craig here the finest joiners in the land but not the luckiest fishermen as they never had a touch, and at the moment you need luck more than skill. The local angling club had a Seatrout from the Glide last night as we let them have a couple of rods in the evening from the Iron Gate down in June and July. Got some grass strimmed and repaired the bottom of one of the fibreglass boats, I went back along this evening and had a cast at the Slap and rose one on a Sunray but no pull.
Wednesday 4th June Torrential rain today, but they did manage a couple of follows to a Sunray and lost a Seatrout in the Slap, that must of been Trish as John canny cast that far! Mind you he wouldn’t get near the Slap when Trish is about.
Thursday 5th June Drier day overcast and the river milky coffee brown so no fishing. 2’11” and 56 degs, the best thing you can say is some fish might come in, at least the Seatrout should take advantage of it. I’m off to Hawick “Mair” so no Friday report as I’ll be fully refreshed!
Friday 4th June Hawick Mair so I haven’t a clue. If you’ve never been to Hawick common riding you should go it’s some experience especially “The Hut” gallons of rum and milk drunk.
Saturday 6th June Tom was rather pleased with himself this morning as he had finally caught a wee Brown trout after years of trying but couldn’t tempt a Salmon, Jeremy on the other hand caught a 8lb fish from the Slap on a wee flashy silver thing. There was a bad south east wind blowing which made the casting difficult. 1’11” and 59 degs and very beery. There were some fish showing in the Cauld and we had a couple of boils at the skimmer also one at the skimmer in the Back of the wall. Heavy rain started about 4.00pm and the river is rising tonight so will be big and brown tomorrow. Soon be Monday. No photos of fish this week as all put straight back without removing from water but some photos from Hawick.
