Week beginning 2 September 2013

Monday 2nd September. A warm sunny start with a stiff north westerly blowing down the river with the gauge sitting at 4” or there abouts as it’s off the gauge it was going to be a struggle, anyway Gene Godden was up to the Ledges and soon had a 6lber and a pull off another on a #10 cascade, Paul thrashed the Cauld all morning and blanked until he stood on the Cauld casting over the stream and had a 12 lb fish. We finished the day with 8 and lost another two so it was a pleasant surprise, without the wind we would have struggled as it was up to 22 degs. All the fish were on fly on a full floating line; two were fresh and the rest a mix of old and older. Tuesday 3rd Another hot sunny day and the water temp up to 6o degs in fact it was 65 by mid afternoon, the only fish of the day was a 4lb old fish caught by Nigel Crosskell whilst wading the Ledges, Nigel has been impressing the other rods in the team with his casting as he has splashed out and bought a new line this year, so impressed that Paul (stone mason of note) fell asleep whilst watching Nigel’s display on the Slap Croy. There were far fewer fish showing which isn’t a surprise given the weather and the catches on the river reflect this. Tim also splashed out and bought a box of flies which took his total stock to 6, but you only need one at a time so should last him a while. I saw a Dipper today, that’s the first one I’ve seen this year. It’s been a stressful evening as I have to get all my veggies ready for the show on Saturday as I have meetings and Flodden events to attend every night till then. It’s a bloody hard job trying to get enough of one type that are all the same size and colour which don’t have holes in them or a bit misshapen I had to dig up half my garden and none look good enough, the judges are a fussy lot everything has to be presented in a different way, on rings or sand, the fishing is easier. Wednesday 4th One at 6lb was the only fish of the day, it came from the back of the wall on a full floater and a wee Silver stoat, although the lads fished all day Tim was top dog with his fish and he was delighted as he had to leave today. Paul and Nigel would like to leave as well but they are enjoying the steaks at the hotel so much they are going to stay. There were a couple of big Otters in the bottom of the Cauld this morning. Water is about 3” on the gauge and 58 degs this morning but still very clean. Thursday 5th was much the same as Wednesday just a lack of fresh fish and Friday 6th followed suit but by Friday night it had started to rain and boy did it rain it was monsoon style.
Saturday 7th The River was at last rising but that put paid to the fishing and the lads packed up and headed for home, 15 for the week was good considering the conditions. I headed for the veggie show to see how I had faired, Clancy its good news, I had 1st prize with the red Onions and two 2nd places with the other ones, in total I had 14 prizes out of 18 entries that I put in so not a bad result.
