Week beginning 2nd June 2019
Monday 2nd June. It was windy then it became really windy a near gale in fact, regular readers will know how much I like the wind so I wasn’t a happy bunny. 1’3” and 56 degrees with a slight tinge. Mick Atkinson and pals here for three days. The only real action was Rod Newton falling in at Learmouth stream by all accounts he had a proper swim. I went along just before dark to lock the hens away and the wind had completely dropped, I thought about having a go for a seatrout but then thought again and went home. There were a good few fresh fish reported on social media with the floors beats having 8 between them.
Tuesday 4th June. A much kinder day with just a light wind now and again.1’3” and 56 degrees with the same tinge to the colour. Tom Hulme lost a fish in the Slap this morning and another had a good pull at a big sunray in the Cauld. Mike had a 10lber from the Glide and Mick had a 15lb fish on a wee bottle tube in the Cauld, Mike not to be outdone then put on the same bottle tube and got another 10lber from the Slap, all the fish were brand new. The sunray this morning had a lot of reaction but no action which is often the way with five different fish chasing and boiling at it this morning in the Slap. The rain has started late afternoon and there is to be a heavy spell during the night, I suggested to the lads that they go for a late dinner as it could be full of weed again tomorrow.
Wednesday 5th June. A day with sunny spells, the Lees gauge showing 1’3” and 56 degrees, a look at the river levels said the top gauges were rising as was the Ettrick and Teviot and a quick look at social media showed a few photos of a very brown river upstream. Rod Newton was on the Slap and Cauld and we chucked a few flies at the place but only saw the one wee coloured fish all morning, David Hulme had more luck down on the Glide getting a fish around the 9lb mark, that was the only fish of the day. After lunch the river had started to rise and by 7.00pm it is sitting at 2’4” at the Lees. The chances of fishing tomorrow are going to be slim as it will lift so much weed of the river bed it’ll be like last Saturday with weed on the hook every cast. This is the last report this week as I’m off to Hawick common riding so will be off the radar for the rest of the week. Looks like heavy rain for Saturday so the river could be in good order next week sometime. As ever see instagram for latest photos and clips. Sunday 9th June. 1’6” slight beery tinge. 4 fish caught yesterday on the beat but I’ve no idea where from.
