Week beginning 5 June 2017
Monday 5th June. Around 4”on gauge and getting weedier by the day. Mick Atkinson and pals here for three days. The lads have fished the Lees a few times so know their way around so it was myself that made the mistake and sent Mick to fish the Back of the Wall instead of Learmouth stream this morning, Oops! He didn’t catch anything in the wall so no harm done. Young Tom Hulme was the lucky one today getting a nice fresh 7lber on a sunray from the Slap on the first cast with it after they had seen a few other flies. It rained off and on all day and at lunchtime the top of the Ettrick and Teviot were both rising, the forecast is for rain tonight and all day tomorrow, hopefully it’ll give us 4’0” and turn the stones over and get rid of the blanket weed as in the Cauld this morning it was weed every cast.
Tuesday 6th June. Very heavy rain today almost monsoon proportions and it’s exactly what we need to help clean this river out. The lads gave it a go this morning but it was blanket weed every cast. All the gauges were rising by mid afternoon and there is more rain tonight and on Thursday so happy days, not so happy if this is your week of course.
Wednesday 7th June. Well all that rain had to have an effect and it did, the gauge was showing 4’2” first thing and rising, it peaked a tad under 5’0” which will do a lot of good, all that blanket weed will be gone the stones turned over happy days. The only fly in the ointment is the rain thats coming in tomorrow as it looks fairly heavy again, not as bad as yesterday but it will keep the levels up, after saying that it’ll also help to dilute the colour so should clear quicker. So with no more rain after Thursday next week is looking good.
Thursday/Friday/Saturday. Hawick common riding
Sunday 11th June. River falling 1’9” at Sprouston and will be clearing to a beery tinge, should be good conditions next week as long as the rain behaves, at least all that blanket week will be gone.
