Week beginning 5 June 2023
Monday 5th June. The cheery weathergirl says its going to turn into the west by the end of the week, I hope she’s right as since I started on 1st April its been north/east, north east/south east and cold or cool at most so an evening cast wasn’t inviting. Anyway today Sandy Lang and pals here for the day, Sandy was up top and his line wasn’t going out that well so I popped home and got my rod which he used and covered the slap no problem, nothing was doing, Sandy said you have a cast and of course you know what happened, first cast a 10lber was hooked and landed on a lightly dressed gledswood shrimp, and thats the last time I’m showing him. We also had a very sharp pull on a tiny conehead and two follows to the collie dug. Further down at learmouth no pulls were had but Paul said there were a lot of seatrout splashing about. It’ll be better tomorrow.
Tuesday 6th June. Another overcast cloudy start with the ever present east wind. One or two showing in the slap but none wanting to play. I saw a nice fish in cornhill bend this morning it was silver and looked about 7lb as it went through. Still very low catches across the websites from the ones that bother to report. Not a lot more to say really.
Wednesday 7th June. A cold grey start to the day and in fact the sun never made it out today, I was even more depressed as I looked at the long range forecast and it says this east wind will last for most of the month. Now I know the cloud is better than the sun for fishing in this low water but we’re not catching anything in the cloud so we might as well have a bit of sun and warmth, it would certainly help the seatrout fishing. Peter Riley and Katie joined us today to make up the four rods but this didn’t help with the scores any. Just seeing the very odd fish here and there but some must have gone through as Junction had 3 yesterday 2 of them fresh on a #16 cascade. As far as water levels go the thunderstorms for the weekend look to be below us so will not help, another thing that won’t help is the starting up of irrigation pumps which are now in situ, one just arrived at the cauldstream bank yesterday and there is one sooking away at the top of the temple, there will be many many more.
Thursday 8th June. Another day with cold east wind and grey skies, I’m getting well fed up with this weather, if we are not going to be catching fish we might as well not catch them in warm sunshine. I hardly saw any fish today, one at the iron gate point and a couple in the slap that was all. I’ve still not ventured out with a rod of an evening but did walk the dogs round last night at 10.00pm and didn’t even see a trout rise. Off to Hawick for the common riding tomorrow so no report for Friday/Saturday.
