Week beginning 5 September 2016
Monday 5th September. Another warm dry day, overcast with a light south wind, 1’1” and 58 degs. Team Godden here for the week and they arrived with a smile or maybe that was a grimace; anyway we did the draw and got everyone to their respective pools. I was down the bottom in the Bags and Middle stream with Tim, we saw some fish in the Bags and gave them a choice of flies but not a pull was had, we then moved to the Middle stream and didn’t see a fish. Gene Godden was the lucky lad this morning getting a wee fresh Grilse from the Glide and seeing plenty others, reports from Learmouth were that there are plenty fish in the stream but all old ones. This afternoon I moved up to the Duddo and Glide and did see enough fish to keep me interested but again no pulls, up on the Cauld however things were better as Tim and Paul managed to winkle out two fresh/clean Grilse on a sunray. No rain on the horizon for the week ahead and the temperature is set to rise with a stiff southerly wind from mid week so it’s going to be more than a challenge. On the brighter side though I emptied out my potato buckets and my kidney potatoes are looking good, I need 8 for the show and I think they could be winners, going to check my coloured ones tonight.
Tuesday 6th September. A very warm day but cloudy and a strong south wind blowing which stirred up the margins and brought some of the stone dirt to the surface. Gene Godden was the only rod to connect with a fish today in what I’d call the lower middle stream; the only fish I saw caught was by the Osprey in the cauld this afternoon. No one saw a fresh/clean fish today, we did see enough fish but all with various shades of colour about them. 10” this morning and 60 degs. There’s nothing more to report really but keep smiling and you never know a fresh one might be on it’s way up from the tide as I write.
Wednesday 7th September. What’s to write about today? Hot sunny in the main and humid, 62 degrees and 9” on the gauge. Pools full of black fish that will not look at anything and pools getting smaller by the day. Anyway the lads fished their way round the beat morning and afternoon only stopping for a BBQ at lunchtime. It’ll be better tomorrow.
Thursday 8th September. The day started off cloudy but soon turned to rain heavy for 20 mins but not anything like enough to help the river. Again the lads fished their way round the beat for no reward, plenty showing in the Glide but all black or brown or red. The osprey gave us a visit again today and was the only one to catch a fish yet again but he’s not fishing for sport. So we wait and wait. It’ll be better tomorrow. 5.40pm just checked gauges and we’re going to get a bit of water as Teviot and Ettrick rising at top end, too late to help this week and will it keep rising?
Friday 9th September. Well there we are river rising and full of weed and other bits, 1’5” and as I said rising with the Teviot at Hawick being 3’8” there was only one thing going to happen. The lads gave it a go for part of the morning them pulled stumps and headed for home which leaves Tim as top rod for the week which is the first time that’s ever happened and likely the last although with his new found skill at the circle “C” who knows what could happen. Heavy rain forecast tonight so it looks like we are going to get the flood that we have been waiting for and we will find out if the fish are there to fill the pools.
Saturday 10th September. Right here we go its 5’0” and brown so by Monday Tuesday we’ll know what’s about so its exciting start to the week. See instagram for photos
