Week beginning 5 September 2022
Monday 5th September. Team Godden here for the week and there’s not much change since they were last here in July, --0” on the gauge and 60 degrees water temp, the weed has not been so much of a problem today and Mike caught a fish in the Glide, it was around 7lb and a bit coloured but went back ok. That was all the action for the day, the flood alert we received on Sunday came to nothing as all the rain was too far west and north yet again. There is talk of heavy showers this week from the cheery weathergirl but it going to take more than showers to help the river.
Tuesday 6th September. A dry warm start with the gauge still 0” and 62 degrees. We were beaten before we started with the amount of weed coming down, it was weed every cast, the lads did give it a go but it was just too frustrating cleaning the fly and the line every cast. There was some steady rain this afternoon over the catchment and some of the upper gauges are rising but not enough, all its going to do is stop us fishing again tomorrow.
Wednesday 7th September. The river was up around 9 inch this morning making it unfishable with weed and algae right through the water column, the lads took themselves off to Alnwick to do a bit of sightseeing. Another flood warning issued for tomorrow afternoon and looking at the forecast it looks like there could be some proper rain over the borders at last.
Thursday 8th September. Heavy rain greeted us this morning coming in from the east, the gauge was reading 1’0” and a water temp of 60f with a bit of weed still coming down although nothing like yesterday. Mike was in the Cauld and had a couple of pulls on a wee tube, we then tried a sunray and hooked and landed a 10lb old hen, Mike was in the action again this afternoon in Learmouth stream where he had another 3 and had a hold of 3 more, Nigel Croskell had a 3lb grilse from Duddo but sadly Gene and Toby failed to tempt anything. The rain became very heavy this afternoon and looks like it is going to hit all the catchment overnight, this might just give us the flood we and the fish really need, sad for Team Godden but Team Brymer coming next week will be rubbing their hands together.
Friday 9th September. Still raining with some heavy pulses, it has come in from the east so perhaps not filled the river as much had it come from the west. 3’0” on the gauge by lunchtime and what a colour with a mix of weed, algae and mud. The lads sadly took down their rods and packed their bags to head home. Is there any chance tomorrow asked Toby, always a difficult one when it might be marginal tomorrow but looking at the colour and the amount of crap coming down plus the Teviot rising again late afternoon I doubt it, maybe above the Teviot somewhere with an Xrap. A 6’0” flood would have been better as when this drops back in the stones will still be covered in slime as 3’0” isn’t enough to turn them over and wash it right out.
Saturday 10th September. 2’3” this morning but very very beery murky. There were a few fish running, not loads but more than of late certainly. Some of the beats were having a go and I’d imagine that the spinner or Xrap would be being put to use. By Monday it should be down to 1’8 or 9” and a lot cleaner so we will see what’s about the place. There is a wee spell of heavy rain on Sunday night that might put more height back into the river but we should get a go before it/if it arrives.
