Week beginning 6 June 2016
Monday 6th June. Another cracking morning for those of us that like the sun, me being one of them, but not much good for those who like dull conditions for fishing. It didn’t stop John though as once he got the hang of his new super dooper all singing and dancing line he had a 7lb fish from the Slap on a #12 silver stoat sort of thing, the fish took a while to recover even though it was unhooked in the water, due to the water temperature being 60 degrees this morning no doubt, you need to play them hard when its as warm as this. I haven’t heard any more reports of fish from the team but they might find a Seatrout or two this evening.
Tuesday 7th June. Another cracking day again depending on what you’re doing. Blue skies no wind and hot, water temp 62 degs, I saw a photo on facebook this morning from Melrose and the river was yellow so that’s coming our way, there has been some very heavy showers and some proper cloud bursts and I see tonight the bottom of the Teviot is up a foot so there’s going to be some colour tomorrow which could bring the Seatrout on big style. This morning Mick was on the Slap croy and had a follow to a wee gold stoaty thing then a good pull on a sunray, we moved into the Cauld and had a big surprise, we had a hold of a fish briefly, it took a #12 silver stoat which was very lightly dressed and being stripped in at the time. That was all the action today as far as I know. The wee bit of water that’s coming is really going to help as it was getting a bit sweaty for the fish and will help the Smolts that are still here to get down to sea. To be cooler tomorrow so that’ll help as well. Only 3 fish reported off the river today but you don’t have to take the catches as it says as some beats don’t report in summer and some are a day or two out as catches are not always reported on the day as a lot of evening fishing will be going on.
Wednesday 8th June. Well it was a perfect day apart from the river which was very murky first thing and by lunchtime it was almost orange, needless to say we never had a touch, there were a number of fish showing in the Slap but nothing was interested thats if they could see the fly. I’m pinning my hopes on the trout being on the rise tonight and if they are they’ll never be easier to catch. This will likely be the last entry this week as I’m off to Hawick common riding for the next three days, snuffing, Hut and the mair along with lots of rum and milk I’ll tell you about it if you ask if I can remember anything about it. 1’1” and 62 degs.
Thursday 9th June. Another lovely sunny morning which is nice but the river is as bad as yesterday, still a yellow orange colour, 1’1” and 60 degrees. There are quiet a number of fish showing in the lower cauld which look like seatrout and a few salmon showing in the Slap, no action off any of them. Remember to log onto instagram for photos and follow tweedbeats
