Week beginning 7 April 2014
Monday 7th April 3’4” 46 degs and very dirty just like milky coffee so not much good today, also it’s been raining off and on all day so not looking good for tomorrow either, at least the wind is still in the west ( I don’t want a gale though) which is better than the east. No trout rise today and no sign of any flies hatching. Tuesday 8th 3’4” and 46 degs but coffee coloured yet again, no rain forecast today so will be back on tomorrow. Filled a few potholes along the drive, cut the grass along the Cauldstream bank, put up a nest box on tree outside hut, put Cockerels that had been dumped on roadside that a lady delivered to me last night into chicken run, they started cock a doodle dooing at 5.30 am so not the cats fault this morning, they are pedigree birds someone hadn’t got the guts to wring their necks. Planted early potatoes this afternoon so expect to see more gardening reports from now as the fishing’s crap, I had 18 entries last year in the local show and this year so far I have 35 entries ticked off in the schedule, I’ll need to put trailer on to get everything there. Wednesday 9th A rather breezy start to the day in fact it was a bugger as I hate the wind. 2’7” and 46 degs tea coloured. Ron Charlton was whooping with joy as he had a 6lb Seatrout with his first cast of the day from the Back of the wall but that was his only whoop as he never had another pull all day, as the saying goes he peaked too early. Tim also had a Seatrout from the Cauld whilst wading the tail end both were liced and in great condition. Its nice to see some Seatrout at this time of year and especially this year as there’s been bugger all else to catch, no hatch of fly today and no trout rising but I bet they are on tomorrow once it settles in a bit more. Kelsae the dug is in disgrace as she found a wee patch of rotten fish and slid along it, you could smell her from 100 yards so she had a major wash at the hut, in fact three washes as I thought I’d missed a bit but it was the other dug Lucy who’d had a sneaky roll as well so she’s been scrubbed as well, dugs don’t we just love them. New Cockerels are doing fine and strutting round the place like “wee banty cocks”. Thursday 10th A nicer day on the river with sunny spells and 2’6” and 48 degs, but that was as nice as the day got as we never had a touch or saw a fish, but it’s not all about catching fish is it????The only people that say that are the ones that are catching bugger all, bit like us really. Lots of Swallows turned up today and there was a wee hatch of March Browns this afternoon with a few trout going at them but it only lasted 5 minutes. The Swans are now getting territorial and there’s been a few fights on the Cauldstream usually right in front of us or just downstream as if its not difficult enough to catch a fish at the moment. The river didn’t drop at all last night and only lost one inch all day when I would like it to drop at least a foot and stay there for the next month or more. Friday 11th Another day of much the same, the lads thrashed the water but nothing to show for their efforts, So that was it for Ron and his team for the week, 2 Seatrout which is more than some have had. Saturday 13th I had a hangover of biblical proportions as it was installation night last night and as usual I drank too much and partied too long but I had warned Andy Britton (Ledges swimmer and Llama breeder of note) that this might be the case, ,anyway once I was into the boat and over the Cauld the wind soon had the hangover chased away and Jim Cootes on his first trip to the Lees soon had a nice fresh 7lb fish in the bag. Ian Gardner lost one in the glide and fell in during the fight as the fish was coming in quicker than he could wind so backing out was the only manoeuvre but don’t reverse quicker than you can control your feet, thats another mobile phone frazzled. Weather looks much more settled next week so I’ll be a happy bunny as I really hate the wind I really hate the wind.
