Week beginning 8 June 2015

Monday 8th June A much better day than all weekend and I feel a lot better as well, 1’4” and 56 degs more or less clean. Mick Atkinson was first at the Slap for the Monday morning fish but failed, he did get a pull off something in the Cauld though, while he was busy in the Cauld David Hulme sneaked out of the hut and got stuck into a 9lber. That’s all I know about today as I’ve been busy strimming and burning the paint off oars so we can row faster in the autumn. The river is looking good, a tad on the low side maybe but good enough for June.
Tuesday 9th June A Seatrout for the club lads last night and 2 from the Tail of the Cauld for our team and lost a couple as well, I lost one in the Slap on a Sunray which was a big Seatrout. I tried the back of the wall last night but it was cold too cold for me on a June night and I also should have perhaps had a sinktip on rather than a full floater. Today I was off to Norham to pick up the oars he’s been repairing then burning them off, undercoating them then off up to the Glide area to spray some Hogweed while the undercoat dries then back to put the top coat on the oars. I called in at lunchtime to see the rods and they told me they had lost a Salon in the Slap and landed a 4lb Seatrout from the Cauld all on a #12 blue and silver thing. It’s been a cracking day today hot and sunny so I might have a look at the back of the wall again tonight.
Wednesday 10th June Well I tried again last night and it was much warmer, I put a wee bottle tube on which was getting right down but not a sniff, I then tried a Sunray and had one pull and a big bow wave that was last night. Today is wall to wall sunshine and hot, there were a few fish showing in the Slap about 10.30 but they were on the move and it soon went quiet. 1’2” and 56degs this morning but I would reckon it’s more like 60degs now. Cut back some branches so the rods don’t catch them when they are on the car, strimmed the Croys on the far bank of the Cauld, painted the rest of the oars and sweated a lot. The big debate now is, do I go fishing tonight or sit in the garden with a bottle of red wine or perhaps a Gin and tonic, think I’ll try the trout in the ledges. Worrying sight today was a fungi fish just above the Slap Croy this morning, a good sized one as well, I’ve reported it to Ronald at the foundation and if I can get a hold of one he wants it kept in a net so he can get some samples.
Thursday 11th June Another hot calm day which was lovely to be out in but not much use for fishing, the Slap was fairly busy with a mix of Salmon and Seatrout but none were in the mood to play.
Friday 12th June Selkirk Common Riding today and I have an invite to the Hammermens Foy so it was an early start and late home. No reports of any fish caught.
Saturday 13th June Off to work feeling a bit tired after Selkirk’s celebrations. 1’0” on the gauge and 61 degs. Torrie managed a few follows and bow waves in the Slap but no takers another fish was seen in the Glide but the heat from the last few days has put paid to the fishing. It is much cooler today and forecast is for it to stay cool over the weekend so that will help a bit but it looks like we are going to miss all the rain that’s further south.
Photo of the Fungi fish that was about last week and a lovely view of the Cauldstream on a hot day.
