Week beginning Monday 13 June 2016
Monday 13th June. A dull damp start to the day with team Harper in attendance, it started off badly with Terry losing a fish first cast in the Cauldstream but he made it all up getting a nice fresh 10lber from the lower cauld half an hour later, but all this is small beer compared to Graham Whitty who was in Learmouth stream and managed two 1@16lbs and 1@7lbs both river fish along with losing one and several other pulls. We are back to a north east wind and rain albeit light rain and not a glimpse of any sun. At 4.00pm the team had reassembled at the hut for a cup of tea so I thought I’d chuck a sunray at the Slap and first cast a 7lber grabbed it, that’s my first of the year main reason being I haven’t fished. I would go out for a cast tonight but I need another nights sleep after Hawick common riding, I’m getting too old for three days continuous partying. The gauges are showing the top of the Teviot rising again but it’s been saying that for a few days and nothing gets down here so it must be on the blink.
Tuesday 14th June Another damp day with an east wind again, 10” and 56 degs with a wee tinge of colour. Terry Harper was on to the Slap croy and soon had a bow wave coming at the fly followed by a fish on the end, after a bit of a tussle a nice 6lber was safely released he also had another pull in the Cauld. Graham Whitty managed to shake off a good sized seatrout in Learmouth stream this afternoon and in fact maybe shook the same one off twice. A convivial BBQ was held at lunchtime followed by more rain, a couple of other bow waves at a sunray in the Slap and that was it for the day. There were some cracking Brownies rising all day but they were wily enough to keep just out of range might get at them this evening.
Wednesday 15th June. 10” and 56 degs with that summer tinge about it. Terry Harper was into the Cauld boat as quick as a rat up a drainpipe and in no time had a fresh 7lber in the net( see instagram tweedbeats for photos) Graham Whitty blanked this morning despite seeing a number of fish in Learmouth stream. A lovely lunch again, roast beef rolls this time with enough beef to choke a tiger. This afternoon I changed the oar pins on the Cauld boat a wee job that took an hour and a half as the old bolts were rusted in and the ends were burred over, so back to the house for nut splitters then found out new pins were ½” too wide so back to house to cut to size. Graham meanwhile had been busy shaking fish off the hook again one in the Glide and one in the Slap; he’s lost 5 this week which is getting to be more than careless. Back along tonight to lock up the hens and its cold, grey and wet with a strong north east wind, had a couple of casts at the Slap with a sunray but nothing even coming up for a look tonight. The seatrout haven’t arrived with us in any numbers in fact there are hardly any even if I did fancy a cast at them its too cold at night yet.
Thursday 16th June. Never mind it being cold at night it’s bloody cold and grey all day., mid day high was 9C which is shocking for the middle of June. 9” and 58 degs today, 3 follows and one pull in the Slap all to a sunray this morning, Graham had a couple of bow waves in the Back of the wall, that was all the fishy action.
Friday 17th June, A little bit warmer today but still wet and grey, but the man who was red hot today was Graham Whitty who landed 6 and lost another 4, if they’d all stuck on he’d have his name on the board and he’d be the only one in June to get 10 in a day. He had 5 of the fish from learmouth stream and one from the Glide the best was 16lbs and the smallest 9lbs, 5 were fresh and one a river fish, all caught on #10 - #8 doubles and trebles with a cascade, executioner and a pink frances being the successful patterns , so well done Graham that’s a great day in June. We are getting work done at the Cobble point at the moment repairing flood damage so there is a huge hole being dug so we can get the digger down to a working level, hopefully all done by next Wednesday. Kevin Wright Ghille at Milen Graden text today to say he’d seen a lot of fish running this afternoon set off by the dirty water coming out of the Till hopefully they’ll with us tomorrow. I’m full of the cold at the moment and a summer cold is the worst, I had a spoonful of sally’s famous tomato relish which nearly melted my teeth and things were very messy for a while but it doesn’t half clear you out. Dry tomorrow and Sunday then back to rain on Monday but from the west this time which will be the first time in months we’ve had it from the west.
Saturday 18th June. Terry Harper got off to a flying start this morning getting a cracking 11lb fresh fish from the Slap on a #8 Ally shrimp on his second cast of the morning, this seems to have pricked Graham Whitty into top gear as he had two at the Iron gate 15lbs and 10lbs, he popped back up for a quick lunch and to shift his car as this are a bit busy at the Lees today what with great big holes and weddings going on, Graham then tackled the Glide and in no time I had a text saying two more fish, he’s really been among them this week and if he had held on to them all it would be a good personal score for a back end week. 10” and 56 degs, the sun has finally come out for what seems like the first time this year, I know we had a couple of sunny days last week but that seems a lifetime ago. So at the moment we are on 17 for the week with as many lost and other pulls that’s a good week in June. Photos on instagram
