Some years ago, the Tweed Foundation, in association with The Wheelyboat Trust, commissioned the creation of a boat for both less able and disabled anglers, for use on large salmon rivers such as the Tweed. Until that point, no such boats existed.
Today, 2 boats (called Tweed Wheelyboats) are available free of charge for anyone who wants or needs them, and many of the main salmon beats are both able and willing to take both the boats and have suitable access for elderly and less able/disabled anglers.
It is not the purpose of this page to go into great detail on how to go about obtaining the use of these boats, rather it is to encourage their use and make the system is as simple as possible.
The necessary steps are:
- Ensure that the beat where you want to fish can and will accept a Tweed wheelyboat by contacting the beat or agent direct.
- Contact the Tweed Foundation on 01896 848271 to make sure that a boat is available for your chosen fishing date(s).
- Once 1 and 2 above are achieved successfully, you can then book both the fishing and the boat.
There are of course other issues (the beat accepting liability for the boat, Health and Safety, the boatman rowing the boat must have been fully trained etc), but these will all be fully explained to you during the above booking process.
