25 October 2015 News/Editorial
Water at last, not much, but the most we have had since the middle of August. The weather map looks messy for next week, especially mid-week onwards.
Autumn fishing as we know it has not happened yet, floating lines and number 10 flies, more likely in August than the end of October, have been the order of the day up to now.
The 2ft rise in the Ettrick will, crucially, allow the springers to get back home to lay their eggs, and for fishermen it will perk things up for a while, but disappear soon enough unless there is more rain to come.
But are there more fish to come in from the sea? Fresh water plus high tides for the next few days, would normally, in the last week of October on the Tweed, produce the right conditions for a major influx of fresh salmon.
But will it this time?
Let us hope so, although the signs are not exactly encouraging from the recent results of the beats nearest to the tide. And, of course, last year it was just about now that the fish appeared to stop coming.
But you never know with fishing, and wouldn’t it be wonderful if a below par autumn so far could end with a bang, not a whimper?
Water and fresh fish are what we have been praying for, for weeks now.
We have some of the first.
Next week will tell us if we are to get any of the other.
